Challenge:
Plan an inclusive tech event that gets kids (grades 4-8) excited about coding and increases diversity in STEM careers
Key Insight:
Research has proven effective methods for removing barriers to diversity, so we presented a strategy that incorporates these techniques for a user-centric event experience.
Tools & Methods: Sketch, iMovie, Journey Mapping, Affinity Diagramming, Wireframing, Design Strategy
design strategy
The inaugural event must be successful to achieve the goals of our client organization. My team created a design strategy that addresses specific barriers to diversity. We recommended a three-step approach for the next six months:
Introduce a “pay-as-able” model to increase diversity at the "Coding Championship"
Build relationships with media, teachers, and partner organizations
Focus on the child's experience for the day of the event to ensure success for all
The pay-as-able model
Finances are a major barrier for disadvantaged populations. A flexible payment model has the dual benefit of increasing diversity at the event and attracting attention from potential partners. We understood our client would be concerned about budget, so we emphasized research that proves the long-term viability of this model.
user journey mapping
The children's experience is critical, so we created a video telling the story from their point of view. First, I sketched a storyboard of one kid's day at the Code Championship to identify the emotional touchpoints of our user's journey. We decided how to address potential issues before they arose, and mapped out the ideal experience. Then I wrote a full script and we recorded a short play for our client. This performance was the centerpiece of our final presentation.
